L.     Summary
Miss Hester asked Alan Mitz to look after her dog Fritz while she visited her sister Eunice.  Alan agreed to look after the dog.  He took the dog for a walk and saw a sign stating that dogs were not allowed.  Before he knew is Fritz had entered the unforebidden garden.  He wandered looking for the dog ending up on Abdul Gasazi’s doorstep.  He asked if he could have the dog back and Mr. Gasazi agreed.  They went to look for the dog only to fird a flock of dicks.  Was Fritz now a duck?  Alan returned home to tell Miss Hester what had happened only to find that Fritz was home too.

N.    Usage with students
Students can identify the Story Elements easily in this story.  This could be used to practice or even introduce story elements.
Writers Workshop – Students can create their own character and describe him or her without using dialogue.

·  Folk Tale Problem Solving
Have your students write their own folk tale. Use the Folk Tale Problem Solving worksheet to help organize the setting, characters, and problem.
·  Garden Creation
Point out to students the pictures of the animal-shaped hedges throughout the story. Then have students become gardeners using green cutouts of circles, triangles, ovals, and rectangles. Create the magic garden at the back of the house – the garden that was never seen.
·  Gardening Tools
On the board, brainstorm a list of tools the magic gardener uses to keep the animal hedges so well manicured. Draw a chart to show these tools and the function they have in the garden. Gardening catalogues may be helpful in finding pictures of the tools.
·  Story Setting
Students will use the Story Setting sheet to describe the different settings that appear in The Garden of Abdul Gasazi.
